Why This Day Matters to MACONA

On June 16, 1976, in Soweto, South Africa, thousands of students took to the streets, marching for their right to a quality education. This monumental event led to tragedy, with many young lives lost, but it also sparked a movement that continues to resonate across Africa today. The Day of the African Child was established by the Organisation of African Unity in 1991 to remember those who fought for education and to reflect on the current realities faced by children in Africa.

For MACONA, this day is not only a commemoration but a call to action. MACONA exists to carry forward the legacy of those students by providing children in West Africa with the educational supplies and support they need to thrive. As we reflect on the legacy of 1976, we celebrate our mission to bridge the gap through vital shipments arriving in places like Bamako, Mali.

Shipment Arriving in Mali

One Specific, Real Story

The story of our mission lives through the hands of every volunteer, such as the students from Atholton High School who packed donated clothes and books for shipment to West Africa. Their dedication mirrors the spirit of those 1976 marchers, working tirelessly to ensure that children in distant regions can walk into classrooms equipped and ready to learn.

Their efforts don't just end at packing; they form a chain of impact: from a school gym packed with supplies to classrooms in Mali, students' dreams are fueled by the generosity of strangers.

The Work, End to End

MACONA operates with precision and passion, managing every step from the sourcing of donated goods to the final delivery. Containers filled with essentials like school supplies, hygiene products, and clothing embark on their journey from our warehouse in Maryland to deliver hope in Mali.

On-the-ground partners ensure that each shipment reaches its intended destination, and our follow-ups guarantee that every donation makes a tangible impact. We pride ourselves on this transparency and effectiveness.
