A week ago, two of our four trackers surfaced in the Port of Dakar. That was the landfall we had waited all summer to see. Now the shipment has done the next thing we hoped for. It has left the port and started to move.
On July 23, the map lit up again, this time south of Dakar.
Three of four, on the highway
MACONA-TT-1 pinged at 17:10 and MACONA-TT2 at 18:02, both on the N1 national highway at M'Bour, a coastal town about 80 kilometers south of Dakar. A third tracker surfaced a short distance away. That brings us to three of the four now reporting, up from two at the port on July 17. Two of the trackers are traveling together and the third is close by, which is exactly what we expect to see when the bags are consolidated for the road.
The bags are now roughly 3,994 miles from the yard in Maryland where we packed them in May. Every ping like this one is a small piece of proof that the donations are real, they are intact, and they are on their way to the families who need them.
What about the fourth tracker
One tracker is still quiet. That does not worry us. These are Apple AirTags, and they only report when an iPhone is close enough to relay them. The quiet one should resurface as the bags move through populated areas, the same way the others have come back online one by one.
Where it goes next
M'Bour is a stop along the way, not the destination. From Senegal the shipment continues overland toward Bamako, Mali, where MACONA distributes the contents, clothing, hygiene products, and over-the-counter medicine, directly to families. This is the stretch where your donation turns into food on a table, a school uniform, or a hygiene kit that keeps a girl in class.
